Idemitsu Denki (New Power)
-
Stable supply from Idemitsu's own power sources
Idemitsu owns its own generation facilities, including power plants at its refineries and solar power stations. As with Hokuriku Electric Power, its pricing is not directly tied to spot market prices, so electricity costs are less prone to sudden swings.
-
Renewable-energy and CO2-reduction plans available
You can also choose plans that use renewable energy and non-fossil certificates to help reduce CO2 emissions.
-
Fuel discounts for low-voltage customers
Low-voltage customers can use the "Kuruma Tokuwari" car discount: 2 yen off per liter of gasoline, or a 200 yen monthly discount for EVs, at Idemitsu and Shell service stations nationwide.
What Is a "New Power" Company?
Since the full liberalization of Japan's electricity retail market in April 2016, customers have been able to buy electricity from companies other than the major regional utilities. These newly entered electricity retailers are known as "new power" (shindenryoku) companies. The systems for "delivering" electricity and "selling" electricity are legally separate (this is called unbundling of power transmission from retail): in our service area, for example, the maintenance of utility poles, power lines, and other transmission and distribution equipment is handled by Hokuriku Electric Power Transmission & Distribution, regardless of which retailer you buy your electricity from. Hokuriku Electric Power's retail division and any new power company are both simply "retailers" that sell electricity on equal footing — whichever one you contract with, it is still Hokuriku Electric Power Transmission & Distribution that actually delivers the electricity to your home or business. That means switching your retail electricity contract to a new power company does not change the quality of your electricity supply or your risk of outages. Idemitsu Denki is one of the new power companies operated by the Idemitsu Kosan group. Hamaoka Shoten acts as a referral agent for Idemitsu Denki: we're happy to answer questions and guide you here at our counter, but the contract itself is made directly between you and Idemitsu Denki.
Low-Voltage, Metered Plans (for households & typical offices)
Please have your meter reading slip (showing your supply point identification number) ready. You can apply directly online.
High-Voltage Power (for factories & equipment)
Please contact us with your meter reading slip on hand. After we provide a quote, the contract is made directly with Idemitsu Kosan.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Q. Will my electricity bill really get cheaper?
A. This depends on your current plan and usage, so we can't say for certain it will always be cheaper. We recommend first checking Idemitsu Denki's plan details against your current usage and contract.
-
Q. I've never heard of Idemitsu Denki — is it safe?
A. Idemitsu Denki is a new power company operated by the Idemitsu Kosan group. We act as a referral agent for them.
-
Q. If the new power company I'm contracted with goes bankrupt, will my power stop?
A. Even if your provider goes bankrupt or withdraws from the market, the transmission and distribution network stays the same, so your power will not go out immediately. If you don't arrange a new contract within a certain period, there is a system that automatically switches you to a "last resort" supply from a major regional utility.
-
Q. Will the quality of my electricity drop, or will outages become more frequent?
A. The same company as before continues to manage the transmission and distribution equipment that delivers your electricity. Changing which retailer you contract with does not change the quality of your power or your risk of outages.
-
Q. Isn't switching complicated? Do I need construction work or to be present for it?
A. If you have your meter reading slip (showing your supply point identification number) ready, you can apply online in a short time. Construction work and being present are generally not required.
-
Q. Do I need to cancel my current electricity provider myself?
A. Once you apply with Idemitsu Denki, your current provider's contract is automatically cancelled, so you don't need to take any separate cancellation steps.
-
Q. Can I switch my factory's electricity (high-voltage) to Idemitsu Denki too?
A. Yes, we also handle switching for high-voltage power. Since an individual quote is required, please have your meter reading slip (showing your supply point identification number) ready and feel free to contact us first.
